Under the Litchi Tree
Under the Litchi Tree
EAU DE PARFUM
The afternoon sun filtered through the dense canopy, casting shifting patterns of gold and shadow on the earth below. Francesca’s fingers brushed the rough bark of the old litchi tree, her touch lingering as if tracing the lines of a cherished memory. It had stood at the heart of her childhood, its sprawling branches a testament to the many seasons it had witnessed. Now, as she stood beneath its shade, she felt the weight of time, the pull of nostalgia, and the spark of something new.
"This is where it all began," she murmured, her voice tinged with reverence.
Anthony’s hand reached out, his fingertips grazing a low-hanging branch, as though he could feel the years embedded in its weathered skin. He glanced around, taking in the serene beauty of the place. Anthony could see why it meant so much to her. There was something timeless about this spot, something that transcended the years that had passed. The scent of rose and vetiver hung in the air, mingling with the earthy aroma of cedarwood and the faint, sweet undertone of burnt sugar.
"You’ve brought me to a beautiful place," Anthony said, his gaze softening as he turned to face her. "A place that means everything to you."
Francesca shook her head slightly, a soft smile curling at her lips. "I come here whenever I need to think. It feels like... a secret only I understand."
Anthony studied her, noting how the light caught in her eyes, amplifying the quiet strength she carried within. "And now you’re sharing it with me."
Francesca laughed softly, the sound a quiet reflection of the moment. "I am." She leaned against the tree, her breath a soft exhale into the stillness. The scent of surrounding fruits and flowers mingled with the resin of the tree — something dark yet gentle, a quiet presence in the air.
Anthony’s voice broke the silence, quiet but earnest. "Do you ever wonder what it means — sharing secrets like this?"
Francesca tilted her head, her fingers tracing the bark’s texture, her thoughts settling like the dust around them. "It means you trust someone with the things that belong to your heart." A breeze stirred the branches above, and a single ripe litchi tumbled to the ground between them. The moment felt suspended, as if the world had paused just for them.
Anthony looked down at the fallen fruit, then back at her, his expression thoughtful. "And love?"
Francesca gazed at the litchi before meeting his eyes. "Love is when you stop guarding the door. When you let someone step inside."

Behind the Fragrance
During their childhood, Joshua and Izak lived in an HDB terrace on Jalan Bahagia, where a chiku tree stood in their front yard. The tree played an integral role in their early memories, as they would run around it on sunny days and pick its ripe fruits to eat.
After moving out in 2006, they never had the chance to taste the fruit again, and over time, its scent and flavour became faint in their memories. To capture the sense of freedom from their childhood, they substituted the chiku with their favourite fruit, litchi, and created Under the Litchi Tree.
Under the Litchi Tree also pays tribute to Singapore’s oldest and the only litchi tree to be conferred Heritage Tree status. Over a century old, this remarkable tree, perched atop Mount Rosie, has stood since the days when Singapore was merely a small fishing port.
